Better Gambling Forum Forms Independent Scientific Committee

The Better Gambling Forum has established an independent Scientific Oversight Committee to ensure its research and policy work is grounded in robust scientific evidence. The committee comprises internationally recognised experts in public health, psychology, addiction science and gambling research, and is tasked with reviewing and guiding the Forum’s outputs.

Members of the newly formed committee include Michael Wohl of Carleton University, Marilisa Boffo of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Sally Gainsbury of the University of Sydney, Judith Glynn of the University of Gibraltar, Josh Grubbs of the University of New Mexico, Serena King of Hamline University, Debi LaPlante of Harvard Medical School and James Whelan of the University of Memphis.

The Forum, an initiative of the Brain Capital Alliance, said the creation of the committee supports its multi-stakeholder governance model and is designed to ensure scientific integrity remains central to its work.

Travis Sztainert, BGF steering committee member, said: “This group brings together world-class expertise in gambling research, and we are incredibly fortunate to have them involved. Their knowledge and experience set the gold standard in this space. Having them independently oversee our work gives the Better Gambling Forum credibility and rigor, ensuring that any recommendations for responsible gambling policy or practice are grounded in the best evidence available.”

Shawn Fluharty, Chair of the BGF Steering Committee, said: “This committee’s independent authority to review and approve all research-related outputs ensures that our work remains free from bias and is guided by the most robust evidence available. Their role is critical in fulfilling our mission to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based framework that genuinely protects players and communities worldwide.”
