PENN Entertainment has announced that its new Hollywood Casino Joliet is scheduled to open on August 11, pending final regulatory approvals. The opening comes nearly six months ahead of the company’s original construction timeline and represents a key development in PENN’s broader expansion strategy within the regulated U.S. igaming and land-based casino sectors.
The new land-based facility replaces the existing riverboat casino and will be located within the Rock Run Collection, a large-scale commercial and residential development situated at the intersection of Interstates 80 and 55 in Joliet, Illinois. The site benefits from high visibility and accessibility, with an estimated 230,000 vehicles passing daily.
The new venue will feature approximately 1,000 slot machines and 43 live table games, including a dedicated baccarat room, alongside a retail ESPN BET sportsbook. Other amenities include a 10,000 square foot event centre with meeting space and approximately 1,330 parking spaces. The transition is expected to increase PENN’s local workforce to around 600 employees, up from 400 at the riverboat property.
As part of its hospitality strategy, PENN has partnered with chef Giada De Laurentiis to open Sorellina by Giada, an Italian-Californian dining concept with 170 seats and a curated wine list. Additional food and beverage options will be provided by McClain Camarota Hospitality, featuring Chicago-based brands such as Lucky Goat by chef Stephanie Izard, Antique Taco, Pretty Cool Ice Cream, and Five50 Pizza.
PENN has stated it expects to draw approximately $130 million in third-quarter funding from Gaming and Leisure Properties, Inc. to support the $185 million project. The company is currently working with the Illinois Gaming Board to manage the operational transition from the current riverboat facility to the new land-based location. Further updates regarding the grand opening are expected in the coming weeks.
“The countdown to the opening of our newest casino begins today,” said Jay Snowden, Chief Executive Officer and President for PENN. “The move from our existing riverboat significantly improves our offerings in the highly attractive Chicagoland market, and both our existing customers and new guests will be able to enjoy premier gaming, dining, and entertainment at this exceptionally accessible new location.”
“We’re thrilled to partner with these elite restauranteurs to bring amazing dining options to the new Hollywood Casino Joliet,” said Todd George, Executive Vice President of Operations for PENN. “These concepts will create a vibrant atmosphere throughout the property and provide our patrons with an array of food and beverage offerings that are unmatched in the market.”
