Betting and Gaming Council Welcome New Commissioners to the Gambling Commission
Betting and Gaming Council CEO Michael Dugher has welcomed the appointment of seven new Commissioners to the Gambling Commission, on behalf of the 110,000 people whose jobs rely on the regulated betting and gaming industry.
The new Commissioners, announced by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, will draw on their knowledge and experience from a wide range of sectors to help provide strategic leadership to the independent regulator.
Following the publication of the White Paper on gambling reforms in April, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve standards, the BGC is working on over 50 workstreams alongside our members which will drive up standards and mean big changes for punters and sport.
As well as supporting tens of thousands of jobs, our members contribute £7.1bn to the economy and raise £4.2bn in taxes to fund vital public services every year.
Michael Dugher, BGC Chief Executive Officer, said: “I would like to welcome the new Commissioners, at this critical time for our industry, on behalf of the 110,000 jobs which rely on our members and the many millions who safely and responsibly enjoy a bet.
“There has been huge progress on safer gambling in recent years and given the contribution the industry makes to UK plc, and given the often complex and technical nature of many of the businesses, I would urge the new Commissioners to get out and about, and to meet with people who are working across our diverse and vibrant sector, in order to truly understand these world-leading operators.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the Gambling Commission to keep raising standards, promote safer gambling, and ensure the voices of punters and those who work in our industry are heard.”
Each month around 22.5 million adults in Great Britain have a bet, whether it’s buying a lottery ticket, playing a game of bingo, visiting a casino, gaming online or having a wager on football, horseracing and other popular sports.
Meanwhile, problem gambling rates in the UK are low by international standards, at 0.4 per cent of the adult population in England according to the latest NHS Health Survey.
The Betting and Gaming Council was established in 2019 and represents over 90 per cent of the regulated industry including retail betting shops, online betting and gaming operators, casinos and bingo operators.
