Casino Guru receives almost 2 million visits each month. On average, 70% of players use their mobile devices. About 30% are desktop users, and less than 1% use tablets and smart TV.
Casino Guru traffic data shows that desktop traffic to the Casino Guru website dominates during working hours. This is an important finding when considering that the desktop is the primary working tool for German people who work in offices from Monday to Friday.
If we take a closer look at the traffic patterns from Casino Guru’s Analytics, we can observe an interesting trend— weekday desktop usage for free slots significantly increases particularly around lunchtime. On the other hand, over the weekend and in the evenings, the desktop traffic decreases.

Peak desktop engagement during work hours:
According to Casino Guru’s data, desktop visits are clearly on the rise during regular business hours, particularly around noon. Users from Germany show a pattern of desktop activity during working hours and higher mobile traffic in the evening, which indicates a shift in usage habits between the day and evening.
Weekend versus workday:
Data from Germany show a clear difference between weekdays and weekends. Weekends see a significant drop in desktop usage, supporting the claim that many people play free slots during work hours. In Germany, traffic shows about four times more visitors during lunch on weekdays than on weekends.
Mobile dominates evenings:
While desktop engagement follows a weekday pattern, mobile traffic remains high all day and peaks in the evenings during free time for most of the workers.
Reduced desktop engagement during Christmas time:
Data from Casino Guru’s traffic over the Christmas holidays of 2024 show a sharp decline in German desktop users. Since Christmas is a public holiday in Germany, the drop in desktop traffic indicates that fewer users visited the site while away from their usual work routines.

Compared to the previous year, the decline in desktop users around Christmas 2024 was much more noticeable. One possible explanation is that Christmas Eve in 2023 fell on a Sunday when desktop traffic, based on our analysis, is already generally low.
This data also confirms the longevity of a pattern, as it spans at least a year. Desktop gaming activity is closely linked to work schedules, with major declines occurring during evenings, weekends, and holidays—times when people in Germany are usually off work.
Results of Casino Guru Forum poll
Since we host the biggest (and multilingual) community of online casino players, we were able to verify a trend we’ve been observing in Germany among other players from different countries. In order to do that, we created a poll on our Casino Guru Forum. A total of 1,205 players took part in this poll, which ran from March 19 to April 14 2025.
The results showed that 796 players admitted to playing online casino games during working hours. Among them, approximately 55% reported playing regularly (daily or several times a week), 26% played occasionally (a few times a month), and nearly 19% said they played rarely (once or twice).
On the other hand, 409 players stated they never play online casino games during working hours.
It’s worth noting that this trend based on our can also be identified in Spain, but not in other countries such as the United Kingdom or Greece. The reason may be cultural differences and different work habits that evolved after the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, a survey by WordTips echoes Casino Guru’s findings. The report mentions that in the US, 80% of employees (including managers) engage in during work hours. Approximately 96% of participants admitted playing games on mobile devices, and 33% on desktops.
It also should be mentioned that the WordTips study focuses on gaming in general and popular games like Candy Crush Saga or Minecraft, while the Casino Guru data is aimed at free casino games.
When did this start and why?
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we work today. The findings of a conducted by Kindbridge Behavioral Health reveal that gaming at work most likely increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, when millions of workers worldwide switched to remote work.
Social isolation caused boredom and/or increased stress, which caused employees to turn to gaming for entertainment. The blurred lines between home and work have boosted the temptation to play games during work hours in order to relax.
Today, the reason why playing games during work hours continues to be popular in some countries is that many employees claim it helps them focus better.
According to the previously mentioned WordTips survey of 1,000 full-time workers, 80% of respondents said they had brief gaming sessions scattered throughout the workday. The majority of them reported that taking breaks or playing during lunchtime relieved stress, made them more focused when they returned to work, and helped them avoid the afternoon tiredness.
Possible benefits and drawbacks
Based on these facts, it is clear that gaming at work is common among Germans and might even be beneficial for some employees. However, potential risks still exist. While gaming in the workplace, including online casino games, may appear to be harmless, it can quickly escalate into more serious issues.
“There are various opinions on whether playing casino games for free helps people regulate their gambling needs or induces more gambling,” says Šimon Vincze, Head of Sustainable & Safer Gambling.
“In any case, Casino Guru stance is to raise awareness about responsible gambling. We think clear guidelines are necessary to prevent gambling from negatively compromising both employees’ lives and the company’s operations.”
