The iconic Tropicana Las Vegas will be demolished on October 9 to make way for the construction of a state-of-the-art ballpark for the Oakland A’s and a world-class entertainment resort destination by Bally’s Corporation.
This marks a significant milestone for both Las Vegas and Major League Baseball, symbolizing the continued evolution of the Strip’s entertainment landscape.
The Tropicana’s demolition will be accompanied by a visual spectacle, featuring 555 drones and a fireworks display by Fireworks by Grucci. While public viewing is restricted for safety reasons, a live stream will be available through the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Bally’s platforms, ensuring the event reaches a wide audience.
The implosion will also be broadcast by major local news affiliates.
Opened in 1957, the Tropicana Las Vegas, affectionately known as “The Trop,” set a new standard for luxury in its heyday with its South Beach-inspired design.
History
Over its 66-year history, it became a symbol of the Strip’s glamour, hosting high-profile guests and performances. This demolition marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter in Las Vegas’ entertainment history with the upcoming ballpark and Bally’s resort.
The demolition will be led by GGG Demolition and Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI), which has overseen numerous high-profile demolitions on the Strip.
The two 23-story towers, spanning 917,400 square feet, will be taken down using over 2,000 pounds of explosives and a precise sequence designed to safely collapse both structures in under 30-seconds.
With a long legacy in Las Vegas, CDI has handled major demolitions such as the Dunes, Stardust, and Riviera hotels. The Tropicana’s implosion represents another chapter in the company’s history, ushering-in the next generation of entertainment in Las Vegas.
Vibrant
“The Tropicana Las Vegas was one of the original pioneers of the Strip, setting the stage for the vibrant, larger-than-life entertainment destination we know and love today,” said Soo Kim, Chair of Bally’s Corporation.
“It’s fitting that this iconic site now represents the future of Las Vegas as we look forward to welcoming Major League Baseball, the Athletics, and an exciting new entertainment complex.
“This moment in Las Vegas history represents more than just the next chapter—it’s the evolution of the Strip, where legend meets innovation to create something truly unforgettable.”
John Fisher, owner of the A’s, added: “The demolition of the Tropicana is an important milestone in the process of bringing A’s baseball to the world-renowned Las Vegas Strip and the community of Southern Nevada.
“We hope that, in time, this site will become a place of unforgettable experiences for fans of the game. We extend our gratitude to Bally’s and GLPI for their partnership as we embark on this project together.”
