Why Empowering Female Leaders is the Ultimate Sports Betting Tech Strategy

In an industry traditionally defined by “old guard” networks, VeliTech is proving that diversity isn’t just a social goal – it’s a performance multiplier. We speak to Tatuli Skhirtladze, Head of VeliSports, to find out more.

The sports betting industry moves fast, and success depends not only on technology but on how teams think, collaborate, and make decisions under pressure. Over the years, I’ve learned that empowering diverse leadership, including more female leaders, is not simply a cultural initiative. It’s a strategic advantage that influences how products evolve and how organisations perform.

My perspective comes from real experience: building VeliSports, leading cross-functional teams, learning a complex industry from the inside, and seeing how trust, ownership, and different perspectives shape stronger products and more resilient teams.

Culture first and the power of default trust:

One of the defining elements of my journey at VeliTech has been the culture of trust. Instead of waiting years to prove yourself before being given responsibility, I was trusted early to take ownership and make decisions, even while I was still growing into the sports betting domain.

That level of confidence from leadership changes how you develop. When you know your voice matters, you take initiative faster, challenge ideas more openly, and learn through real accountability rather than observation from the sidelines.

Building VeliSports required constant adaptation, from understanding player behaviour to shaping product strategy and team dynamics. Having genuine ownership allowed me to grow alongside the product itself, not after it was already established. It’s a culture that pushes you to deliver, but also encourages continuous learning and evolution.

Diversity as a product driver:

Sports betting products are deeply connected to user behaviour, psychology, culture, and engagement patterns, all play a role in how players interact with platforms. When teams approach product challenges from only one perspective, solutions can become limited or disconnected from real users.

At VeliSports, diverse viewpoints help us challenge assumptions and refine ideas more effectively. Different experiences lead to better discussions, more thoughtful prioritisation, and features that resonate across markets.

Equality and inclusion, from my perspective, are not abstract ideals. They are practical tools for building smarter products. Teams that reflect diverse thinking are better equipped to anticipate user needs, avoid blind spots, and adapt quickly to changing market expectations.

Balanced teams ultimately make better decisions, and in product development, better decisions directly translate into stronger performance.

Leadership style – the empathy/accountability balance

Strong leadership is not about choosing between empathy and accountability; it’s about maintaining both. Creating an environment where people feel heard and respected encourages honest discussions, constructive disagreement, and better decision-making.

One example is a cross-functional initiative I led that brought together women in senior leadership roles who significantly influenced how our teams collaborated and made decisions. They encouraged open dialogue, challenged ideas constructively, and ensured that different perspectives were considered before decisions were made.

The impact went beyond a successful rollout. Teams became more confident, communication improved, and ownership increased across functions. When people feel trusted and supported, they are more willing to take responsibility and contribute innovative ideas.

I truly believe that empathy, listening, and understanding people are not just good values; they are strategic tools for building strong, sustainable teams and businesses. In this context, empathy isn’t soft; it’s how you create trust, alignment, and results that last.

Mentorship and the next generation:

Empowering female leaders also means creating pathways for others to grow. Within VeliTech, I actively encourage team members who demonstrate initiative to lead projects, present ideas, and gain exposure across departments. Often, growth begins with a simple opportunity to be visible and trusted.

Beyond the company, I lectured at the Free University of Tbilisi, where I worked with students interested in technology, product, and project management careers. Supporting young women through mentorship, internships, and real industry exposure helped them see that leadership roles were achievable and that their perspectives were valuable.

Mentorship is not about giving direction from above; it’s about sharing experiences honestly, the lessons, challenges, and successes, and helping others navigate their own paths with confidence.

Defining the future:

The future of sports betting technology will be shaped by leaders who understand both people and performance. Empowering female leaders is not only about representation, but it’s also about expanding how organisations think, innovate, and build products that resonate with diverse audiences.

At VeliTech, leadership means empowering teams, encouraging curiosity, and creating environments where individuals can contribute fully. As the industry continues to evolve, organisations that embrace diverse leadership styles will be better positioned to innovate and adapt.

I believe the next generation of women in iGaming will not only participate in shaping the industry, but they will help define how it grows, how teams collaborate, and how technology continues to evolve.
