World Cup Golden Boot, The Top 10 Contenders And Coming Young Guns

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicking-off today, iGF Sportswriter Ross Kilvington celebrates past, present and potential future winners of the competition's most coveted individual prize -- The Golden Boot

The World Cup Golden Boot betting market is always one of the most dynamic and heavily debated ahead of every tournament.

This year 48 teams will take part in the World Cup for the first time. As such, that means more matches – and, indubitably, bigger goal totals than in previous tournaments.

Realistically, the winners of the Golden Boot mainly come from those teams going deep into the competition; although there are a few outliers.

For example in 2014 in Brazil, James Rodriguez of Colombia won the award despite his team being knocked-out 2-1 by the hosts in the quarter-finals.

Brazil, incidentally, then got hammered 7-1 in the semi-finals by a rampant Germany, one of the heaviest defeats in World Cup history, who then went on to beat a Lionel Messi-led Argentina 1-0 in the final.

And in 1994, Oleg Salenko shared the award after scoring six goals, all of them coming in the group stages as Russia failed to advance.

This FIFA World Cup there are plenty of elite quality strikers at their peak, along with several young stars gunning to enjoy a breakout tournament, which makes this one of the most interesting markets to bet on.

Currently playing for Real Madrid, France forward Kylian Mbappé is the hot favourite to win the coveted Golden Boot award at this year’s FIFA World Cup

Here are the Top 10 Golden Boot Contenders:

1. Kylian Mbappé – France: 11/2

Kylian Mbappe, of course, won this award at the 2022 World Cup, scoring eight times as France lost the final to Argentina 4-2 on penalties after extra time ended 3-3.

The Real Madrid striker, now aged 27, has scored a total of 12 goals at two Mundials, and he could realistically end the 2026 edition as the highest scorer in World Cup history. Five more goals would see him overtake Germany’s Miroslav Klose’s tally of 16.

Mbappe averaged two shots on target per game in 2022, finishing the competition with a 26 percent goal conversion rate. And with France likely going deep in North America, he is the favourite for a reason.

2. Harry Kane – England: 7/1

Like Mbappe, England’s “golden balls” already has a Golden Boot to his name, winning the award in 2018.

The Bayern Munich striker is England’s designated penalty taker, which offers him the chance to add nominally easy goals to his tally.

With 79 goals for his country, Kane is always a threat, especially at major tournaments.

 3. Lionel Messi – Argentina: 12/1

Despite winning two Golden Ball awards and the World Cup itself, the great man has never won the Golden Boot.

Having scored 13 goals across 26 matches at the World Cup, Messi averages 0.5 goals per game. With this likely to be his final World Cup, don’t be surprised to see him lead the scoring charts.

4. Mikel Oyarzabal – Spain: 12/1

Spain will be targeting a deep run in North America, which opens plenty of opportunities for Oyarzabal to get on the scoresheet.

He has 24 goals for Spain, scoring once nearly every two games. The supremely gifted Oyarzabal will be the focal point of the Spanish attack this summer.

5. Erling Haaland – Norway: 14/1

With Manchester City’s fearsome Viking warrior Erling Haaland leading the line, Norway are potential dark horses in North America and anything is possible.

The centre-forward is a veritable goal machine and has scored a remarkable 55 goals in 50 appearances for his country and is arguably the most clinical striker in the world.

6. Lamine Yamal – Spain: 18/1

The teenager (yes, he is still only 18-years-old) has already scored six goals for Spain and was vital to their victorious Euro 2024 campaign.

An injury scare threatened to rule him out of the tournament, but it looks as though Yamal will feature.

7. Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal: 20/1

Alongside Messi, Ronaldo is regarded as the finest player of his generation, yet he has only a relatively-modest eight World Cup goals to his name across five tournaments.

Now 41-years-old, the evergreen, who plies his business in Saudi Arabia, has scored 13 goals across his last 15 appearances for Portugal and this, undoubtedly, will be his last shot at World Cup glory. As always, Ronaldo will be desperate for goals and glory.

8. Ousmane Dembélé – France: 20/1

The current Ballon d’Or holder, Dembélé will look to lead France’s charge for a third World Cup trophy.

Despite his success with PSG in recent seasons, Dembélé has scored only seven goals in 58 games for Les Bleus.

9. Julián Alvarez – Argentina: 25/1

Alvarez enjoyed a breakthrough tournament in 2022, scoring four goals as Argentina won their third World Cup. He even finished joint-third in the race for the Golden Boot.

Messi remains Argentina’s talisman, but Alvarez could be a standout performer in North America.

10.Vinicius Júnior. – Brazil: 25/1

Brazil begin every World Cup as one of the favourites, but will the presence of Vini Jr. aid them in their quest for a sixth world crown?

The Real Madrid superstar has scored just one in the World Cup before, and nine goals in 49 games for the South Americans isn’t the best of records.

But matches against Haiti, Morocco and Scotland await in the group stage, giving Vinicius Júnior a chance to bag a few goals early on.

And Three Young Guns to Watch: Breakout Stars with Big Prices

Michael Olise – France: 40/1

Olise enjoyed an incredible season with Bayern Munich, scoring 22 goals and recording 31 assists in all competitions.

The former Crystal Palace winger only made his debut for France in September 2024, yet has scored four times in 16 appearances. He should begin the tournament as a starter in Didier Deschamps’ side, giving him a chance to score aplenty.

Désiré Doué – France: 50/1

The Frenchman and PSG striker already has two Champions League winners medals under his belt and this should be a breakout tournament for the winger.

Doué has scored twice for his country across just six games and odds of 50/1 offer real value.

Arda Güler – Turkey: 125/1

More of an assist king than an out-and-out scorer, Güler has the starting advantage that Turkey–touted as potential dark horses–has been placed in a favourable qualifying group.

At Euro 2024 he scored once and registered two assists. And the attacking midfielder has scored six goals for Turkey in 30 matches.

Germany’s Miroslav Klose, winner of the 2006 Golden Boot, scores against Ghana in the qualifying round against Ghana in the 2018 Brazil World Cup

World Cup Top Goalscorers Statistics

Miroslav Klose leads the way when it comes to World Cup top goalscorers. The German striker scored 16 goals across four tournaments, winning the Golden Boot in 2006. He is also the only player to win four World Cup medals.

Just Fontaine holds the record of most goals scored at a single World Cup. In 1958, the Frenchman netted 13 times in just six matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to score in five World Cup tournaments, scoring in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.

Six goals has been enough to win the Golden Boot in eight World Cups. The second most common total to win the Golden Boot is five and eight goals, which has happened three times apiece.

2026 Golden Boot favourite Kylian Mbappé holds the record for the most goals scored in World Cup finals, netting four across the 2018 and 2022 finals for France.
